The Official Register of Color Names — Terms of Service (RTOC). Version 2.0 — Effective July 11, 2026.
1. Introduction
Welcome to The Official Register of Color Names (ORCN Register) at color-register.org, a dedicated platform for naming and registering unique colors. We help individuals, businesses, and organizations immortalize their creativity by associating a distinct name with a specific color.
Things to know before you start
- Plain language. We’ve reduced the legal speak to make these terms accessible.
- Short names. In this document, “ORCN”, “the ORCN Register”, and “the Register” all mean The Official Register of Color Names at color-register.org; “the Store” means store.color-register.org.
- Register and Store. The Register (record-keeping) works alongside store.color-register.org (sales). Each has its own terms — RTOC for the Register, STOC for the Store.
- Agreement is required. Using our services means you accept this RTOC and our Privacy Policy. If you disagree, you won’t be able to use the service.
- This RTOC governs. In case of any conflict with another document, this RTOC is the final word.
- Accessibility. If this RTOC is hard to read or you need it in a different format, contact us via our Contact Us page.
- Updates. We’ll let you know about material changes. Questions? Contact us.
2. Service Description
The ORCN Register is dedicated to the registration and storage of existing and new color names within The Official Register of Color Names (ORCN). Our mission is to provide a reliable, permanent system for associating unique names with specific colors — a cultural and educational effort to give every digital color a human name. Registration is intended as a personal, commemorative, creative, or entertainment service.
The Register operates within the digital color space. Every registrable color is one of the 16,777,216 colors of the 24-bit RGB model — the standard that defines the colors displayed on digital screens. This makes the Register finite: there are exactly 16,777,216 possible Color Codes, and each can carry only one registered Color Name.
How registration works
- Color Code. Each color is identified by a HEX triplet and 24-bit RGB code (the “Color Code”).
- Unique assignment. Each Color Code is assigned exactly one official “Color Name.” The same name cannot be linked to multiple codes.
- Personal Message. Entries may include a note to complement or explain the name, which may appear on the Color Page and/or Certificate.
- Digital certification. Registered names receive an official digital “Color Certificate” as proof of registration.
- Dedicated page. Each registered color gets its own permanent, publicly accessible “Color Page” with a unique URL, open to indexing by search engines and AI-powered search platforms, featuring its details, name, and Personal Message.
- Page and certificate design. The layout, design, and any additional content of Color Pages and Certificates (including reference information and advertising) are determined by the Register and may evolve over time. The registered Color Name, Color Code, and Personal Message remain the core of the entry.
- Indefinite storage. Names are stored indefinitely and cannot be renamed or removed, except upon cancellation of the order under the Store’s Refund Policy, where required by law, in cases of fraud, abuse, infringement of third-party rights, or other exceptional legal or ethical circumstances that the Register, acting reasonably and in good faith, determines to constitute sufficient grounds. Any such decision by the Register will be accompanied by a written explanation.
- Alternative names. A Color Page may list alternative color names that are already widely used across the internet for technical reference purposes. However, only one of them is recognized, designated, and recorded as the official registered Color Name.
Disclaimer
The ORCN Register operates as a private registry service, independent of any governmental entities or educational institutions. “Official” means it is the single authoritative record within this Register — it does not confer any governmental, legal, or trademark status. The service consists of recording the Color Name as a permanent entry in the Register’s database, publishing its Color Page, and issuing a digital Color Certificate as proof of registration. Registration does not create, transfer, or imply any legal rights to the color itself, including trademark, copyright, or design rights.
Access to the site may incur third-party fees (such as Internet service charges). You are responsible for securing access and the equipment needed to connect to color-register.org.
3. Color Naming Rules
To keep the Register meaningful and readable, the following rules apply:
Color Name rules
- No offensive content. Obscene or offensive words or phrases in any language, or any inappropriate content, are strictly prohibited.
- Any language, Latin script. A Color Name may be in any language, as long as it is written in the Latin alphabet (see technical requirements below) and is understandable to a reader.
- Not numbers only. A name cannot consist solely of digits.
- No near-duplicates. A name that differs from an already registered Color Name only insignificantly — for example by punctuation, hyphenation, spacing, or capitalization (e.g. “Second-Green” where “Second Green” is already registered) — is treated as the same name and cannot be registered for another color code.
- No imitation of codes. A name cannot imitate a HEX value or any other code. In particular, a name consisting of 3, 6, or 8 characters using only the digits 0–9 and the letters A–F is not allowed, because it forms a valid HEX code — even if it reads as a word (e.g. “Facade” is the valid HEX code #FACADE). The Color Name must be understandable to the reader, not a disguised code.
- Name must not contradict the color. If the name contains a color word or describes a color property (e.g. “Green”, “Pink”, “Dark”, “Light”), it must not contradict the actual properties of the selected color code — its hue, lightness, and saturation categories. The authoritative categories for each color are those shown at the bottom of its color page, in the “Conversions between color systems” section; the Library article Understanding Categories of Digital Colors explains the category system for reference. For example, “Second Green” cannot be registered for a color whose category is Red, and a very light color should not be named “Dark”.
- No third-party trademarks. A name may not include a third-party trademark or well-known brand name, or suggest affiliation with or endorsement by any brand, organization, or standards body (e.g. “Coca-Cola Blue”). Entries may be removed upon a substantiated claim by a rights holder.
- No impersonation. A name may not be used to impersonate, or falsely imply registration by, another person or organization.
Personal Message rules
- Language. Personal Messages may be written in any language using the Latin alphabet. If a Message is not in English, the Color Page may additionally display an automatic English translation, clearly marked as such; the Certificate always shows the original text only. The Register is not responsible for minor translation inaccuracies, but will correct a translation upon request.
- Same content standards. No offensive, obscene, or inappropriate content; no impersonation; no misleading use of third-party trademarks.
- Web addresses. A Personal Message may mention a web address (e.g. a domain name). However, the Register may remove or edit out an address that stops working, redirects to unrelated or inappropriate content, or serves purely as advertising.
Technical requirements
- Color Name: 3–40 characters. Allowed characters: Latin letters, digits, spaces, and the symbols - (hyphen), ' (single quote), . (dot), & (ampersand).
- Personal Message: up to 140 characters, displayed on up to 4 lines. Allowed characters: Latin letters, digits, spaces, and the symbols ! (exclamation mark), ( ) (round brackets), - (hyphen), ' (single quote), " (double quote), . (dot), , (comma), & (ampersand).
If a submitted Color Name or Personal Message does not meet these rules, the registration will not be completed — or, if the issue is discovered later, the entry may be corrected or removed. In such cases we will contact you: you may update the name or message, select a different color code, or receive a refund.
Offensive or controversial Color Names or Personal Messages may be removed at the sole discretion of the ORCN. The ORCN is a permanent, public record — each name must be one a reader can understand and that reflects well on the Register.
4. License & Site Access
color-register.org grants you a limited license to access and make personal use of the Site and the Service. This license does not include:
- downloading or copying data from the Register for the benefit of another vendor or third party;
- caching, unauthorized hypertext links to the Site, or framing of any Content available through the Site;
- uploading, posting, or transmitting any content you do not have the right to make available (such as another party’s intellectual property);
- uploading, posting, or transmitting any material containing software viruses or any code designed to interrupt, destroy, or limit the functionality of any software, hardware, or telecommunications equipment;
- any action that imposes (in color-register.org’s sole discretion) an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on our infrastructure;
- any use of data mining, robots, or similar data-gathering and extraction tools.
You may not bypass any measures used by color-register.org to prevent or restrict access to the Site. Any unauthorized use immediately terminates the permission or license granted to you.
5. Eligibility
The Services are available only to individuals aged 18 or over who are able to form a legally binding contract, and to legal entities acting through authorized representatives. color-register.org may refuse to provide the Service to anyone who has previously engaged in fraud, abuse, or violations of this RTOC. If you do not qualify, you may not use the color-register.org Service or the Site.
6. Your Registration Record
The Register does not use user accounts and does not require you to create a password. Your relationship with the Register is based on your registration record: the registered Color Name, its Color Code, any Personal Message, and the email address provided at purchase.
The email address associated with a registration identifies its registrant. We use it to deliver the Color Certificate, to notify you of anything concerning your entry, and to verify requests relating to it — such as corrections, changes to or removal of a Personal Message, or updating contact details. Instructions received from the registrant’s email address are treated as authorized by the registrant.
You agree to provide true, accurate, and complete information when registering a color. If your email address changes, contact us from the original address or provide proof of the original purchase so we can update the record. The registrant contact may be transferred to another person on request (for example, when a registration is a gift). We may decline requests we cannot reasonably verify.
color-register.org reserves the right to refuse service and to remove or edit content in accordance with this RTOC.
7. Submitted Content
By submitting any unsolicited information and materials — including comments, ideas, questions, designs, and other similar communications (collectively, “Unsolicited Information”) — to color-register.org through the Site, you agree to be bound by these terms. If you do not agree, you should not provide any Unsolicited Information through the Site.
All Unsolicited Information will be considered non-confidential and non-proprietary. color-register.org and its affiliates may use such communication or material for any purpose whatsoever, including reproduction, disclosure, transmission, publication, broadcast, and further posting. We are free to use any ideas, concepts, know-how, or techniques contained in it for any purpose, including developing, manufacturing, and marketing products.
By submitting any Unsolicited Information, you grant color-register.org a perpetual, royalty-free, and irrevocable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, create derivative works from, transfer, and sell such Unsolicited Information, and to use your name and other identifying information in connection with it.
8. Disclaimer of Warranty
YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT THE SITE, SERVICES, AND CONTENT ARE PROVIDED ON AN “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” BASIS. NONE OF THE COLOR-REGISTER.ORG OWNER AND AFFILIATE PARTIES GUARANTEES THE ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS, TIMELINESS, RELIABILITY, SUITABILITY, OR USEFULNESS OF ANY PORTION OF THE SITE, SERVICES, OR CONTENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SITE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT THE SITE, ITS SERVER, OR ANY FILES AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD ARE FREE OF VIRUSES OR OTHER HARMFUL ELEMENTS.
YOU EXPRESSLY AGREE THAT THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE SITE, SERVICES, AND CONTENT IS ASSUMED SOLELY BY YOU. WE SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM ALL REPRESENTATIONS, ENDORSEMENTS, GUARANTEES, AND WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT OF THIRD-PARTY RIGHTS. YOUR SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR DISSATISFACTION IS TO STOP USING THE SITE AND SERVICES.
9. Limitation of Liability
YOU EXPRESSLY UNDERSTAND AND AGREE THAT COLOR-REGISTER.ORG AND ITS SUBSIDIARIES, AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, PARTNERS, AND LICENSORS (EACH, A “COVERED PARTY”) SHALL NOT BE LIABLE TO YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES — INCLUDING DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF PROFITS, GOODWILL, USE, DATA, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES (EVEN IF A COVERED PARTY HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES) — RESULTING FROM USE OF THE SITE, CONTENT, OR SERVICES. ANY DAMAGES ARISING FROM THE ABOVE SHALL BE LIMITED TO A REFUND OF THE USER’S PURCHASE, IF ANY, ON THE SITE.
Consumer rights. Nothing in this RTOC (including Sections 8–10) excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, or affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
10. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold the Covered Parties harmless from any claim or demand — including reasonable attorneys’ fees — arising out of or related to your breach of this RTOC, your use of the Site or Services, or your violation of any law or the rights of a third party.
11. Intellectual Property Rights
The trademarks, logos, and service marks (“Marks”) displayed on the Site are the property of color-register.org and other parties. Users are prohibited from using any Marks for any purpose — including as metatags on other pages or sites — without the written permission of color-register.org or the third party that owns the Marks.

12. Modifications & Notifications
color-register.org reserves the right to make changes to the Site, related policies and agreements, this RTOC, and the Privacy Policy at any time. If color-register.org makes a material modification to this RTOC or the Privacy Policy, it will notify you by displaying a prominent announcement above the text of this RTOC or the Privacy Policy, as appropriate, for thirty (30) days. You agree that such notification is sufficient notice of the changes.
13. General
Severability, entire agreement, and waiver
If any of these conditions are deemed invalid, void, or unenforceable, the parties agree that the court should give effect to the parties’ intentions as reflected in the provision, and the unenforceable condition shall be severable and shall not affect the validity of any remaining condition. From time to time color-register.org may offer special promotional offers, which may carry additional terms you agree to be bound by. Headings are for reference only. color-register.org’s failure to act on a breach does not waive its right to act on later or similar breaches. Except as expressly provided, there are no third-party beneficiaries to this RTOC. This RTOC, together with the Privacy Policy and any document linked from it, constitutes the entire agreement between you and color-register.org, superseding any prior agreements.
Electronic communication
When you use the Site or send emails to color-register.org, you are communicating electronically and consent to receive communications from us electronically. We will communicate with you by email or by posting notices on the Site. You agree that all agreements, notices, disclosures, and other communications we provide electronically satisfy any legal requirement that they be in writing.
